FROM THE NEWSROOM: Between rising costs for equipment, state mandates for pollution control, unpaid bills, and few equivalent dwelling units participating in the Thompson Water Pollution Control Authority sewer system, officials say the need has come to raise the annual fee. The increase will be 19.6 percent, making the yearly bill – per equivalent dwelling unit – about $400. The increase translates to an extra $65 per year, or $5.42 per month. WPCA officials say the increase was necessary due to rising costs in healthcare, equipment replacement, and state mandates – including phosphorous mitigation. Due to these costs, and delinquent sewer bills, the WPCA has fallen about $53,000 in to the red. Chairman Sam Stilwell says a similar increase may be necessary next year, but any other hikes will become steadily lower in subsequent years. Sam Stilwell, Chairman of the WPCA commented that, with approximately 500 homes connected to the sewer system, the costs are higher than they could be. Plans are being made to hook more homes into the town sewer system, a plan that some homeowners have expressed interest in. If lines are installed near a home which decides that they do not want to hook in, the owner may be required to pay a “frontage fee,” the cost of which has not be determined yet. Two residents attended last nights special WPCA meeting to discuss and act on increases to the sewer rate. Tune in for the full report.
