FROM THE NEWSROOM: Contrary to statements previously made by Thompson First Selectman Paul Lenky, Selectman Kerstin Forrester provided another angle on the subject of doubling the cost of pistol permits in the town. “Its costing us more than $35 to process the gun permits here,” said Forrester, who added that this leads her to conclude that other towns which had raised their permit application fees in the past couple of years did so for that very reason—because they had to. As previously reported, many surrounding towns increased their fees in unison with the rest of the state when firmer gun regulations were enacted in 2013. Now that Thompson officials have taken into account the amount of time that it takes to process paperwork for each individual who applies for a permit, the reality is that the cost is closer to $70 per permit. According to Forrester, an applicants processed paperwork needs to be sent to the state before they are interviewed by the First Selectman, and once interviewed, the papers must be re-sent. “If you take the labor time—including benefits—paperwork, copies, all of that—youre pushing $70 easily,” she said. Many town residents were vocal about their opposition to the permit increase, and some even mailed letters to the First Selectman regarding their opinion—but officials say the new fee regulation is on par with state standards and may indeed be a necessary move made by the town. Tune in for the full report.
