FROM THE NEWSROOM: For the second year, an open house will be held at the Putnam Fire Departments Church Street station today– a collaboration between the Putnam and East Putnam Fire Departments and Putnam EMS to get smoke detectors into the hands of as many families as possible in the area. Last year, 250 smoke detectors were given away through the event; speaking on WINY, Assistant Fire Chief Bob Campbell said that this year, emergency responders hope to go above that number and have added a maintenance component to the giveaway. “Our point again is getting out smoke detectors. We purchased some 9-volt batteries, so that way those people who got smoke detectors last time can get some batteries to replace the [old ones,]” Campbell said. “This is also in memory of our two little ones that we lost over a year ago, Ava and Alexis. That will be in our memory for our time – and hopefully, that reminds other people that they should have fire safety in their homes,” he said. Ava and Alexis Auger died in a house fire in January of last year; local fire fighters and other emergency personnel who responded to the early morning blaze now annually give out free smoke detectors, with the hope that a similar tragedy never takes place again. The event will be held from 9 to noon today. Officials say that smoke detectors will be available to anyone who attends the open house, regardless of where they reside. Families will also be able to take tours of the department and trucks; information about volunteering with the fire department will also be available.
