(AP) — Connecticut officials say theyre working with federal authorities to match some of the thousands of immigrant Central American children with family members living in the state. Mark Ojakian (oh-JAY-kee-an), Gov. Dannel P. Malloys chief of staff, said the administration is also working with the federal government to help families who want to house some of the children temporarily. Ojakian said the administration believes its best to place any child with their family first and avoid congregate or institutional settings wherever possible. This week, Connecticut rejected a federal request to temporarily house up to 2,000 migrant children. Ojakian said federal authorities were immediately seeking facilities with no less than 90,000 square feet of open space, among other requirements. He said Southbury Training School and other vacant state property were not feasible.
