So this year for Poetry Month, Im going to go around the world, in no particular order, and post my favorite poems from Asia, Africa, Europe, and South American (unless someone can point me in the direction of poems from Antarticans, and then Ill include them as well). We will start in China, but not with one of the Big Three (Du Fu, Li-Bai or Wang Wei, but with Bai Juyi, formerly known as Po-Chu-I, who was reported to have his servants read his poems first and revise them if they didnt understand them. Hes the most popular and most widely read of the Tang Dynasty poets. I would post his most famous and popular poem, Song of Everlasting Sorrow, but its too long. Instead here, for spring, is The Almond Blossoms of Chao Village For fifteen long years, Times without number I have come To see the red almond-blossoms Open in the spring. Now I am growing old— I am all of seventy-three, And it is hard for my old legs To come thus far. I fear that this time Is the last, And I have come To bid the red blossoms of the almond A long farewell Po Chu-I
