(AP) — Connecticuts largest association of cities and towns is asking the governor and state lawmakers to at least maintain current levels of state aid when they craft a new two-year state budget. Ron Thomas, director of public policy and advocacy for the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, said Monday the funding is needed help prevent local property taxes from increasing. The organization also wants the state to fully reimburse municipalities for state-mandated property tax exemptions, including colleges and hospitals. Lawmakers return to the Capitol on Wednesday to convene the new session. The group also wants the state to increase its financial commitment for public education and provide adequate funding to maintain and construct roads and bridges. The group seeks a state plan to make sure local infrastructure is improved by specific dates.
