FROM THE NEWSROOM: HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The Senate has approved the nomination of former New Haven Sen. Anthony Avallone, despite concerns the 66-year-old will become eligible for a $100,000-a-year state pension once he turns 70. Republican Sen. John Kissel said Friday the Democratic National Committee member is well-qualified to sit on the Superior Court bench and its unfair to oppose him because of a system requiring mandatory retirement at 70. If ultimately confirmed, Avallone could later serve as a judge trial referee. Kissel said Avallone was eligible for a pension anyway because he served 10 years in the General Assembly. The Senate voted 29-5 in favor of Avallone, sending his nomination to the House. Democratic Sen. Dante Bartolomeo voted no, saying she cant support someone getting a judges full pension and not working 10 years.
