FROM THE NEWSROOM: In Thompson Sunday, community members will celebrate the memory of a local volunteer firefighter who lost his life in a vehicle accident late last month. 23-year-old Dane Picard sustained fatal injuries in a motorcycle accident on August 26. He was a firefighter with both the East Thompson Fire Department and Community Fire Company in North Grosvenordale. Family and friends are holding a memorial dinner Sunday at the Valley Springs Sportsman Club in Thompson to raise funds to establish a memorial scholarship in Picards memory. “He was an all-around great guy who definitely put his heart and soul into everything that he believed in and that he stood for,” said East Thompson Fire Chief Jeff Sheldon. “He was a great role model for anybody to look up to. If you knew Dane, he touched your heart.” Community Fire Company Chief John Sharpe said that Picard was an associate firefighter with the North Grosvenordale department for many years, who planned to attend the Connecticut State Police Academy with his brother to pursue a career in law enforcement. To make a donation to the memorial scholarship fund, contact Amber Axtell at 860-382-6454 or Nichole Kozaczka at 860-481-5716.
