FROM THE NEWSROOM: MASHANTUCKET, Conn. (AP) — The police department for the tribe that owns and operates Foxwoods Resort Casino has gained new authority under an agreement signed with the state of Connecticut. Police for the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation can now exercise law enforcement powers, including at Foxwoods, and the department agrees to recognize and enforce state law under the memorandum of understanding announced Friday. By winning authority to carry out tasks typically reserved for state troopers, the Mashantucket Pequots reduce the need for state agents at the casino where their salaries have been covered by the tribe. State officials say troopers will maintain a presence at the casino and will be called in as needed to investigate major crimes. A similar agreement with the Mohegan Tribe was announced in May.
