FROM THE NEWSROOM: NORWALK, Conn. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal is calling the Coast Guard to restrict the number of times it allows a railroad swing bridge over the Norwalk River to rotate open. The 118-year-old Walk Bridge has become stuck twice in the last two weeks, leading to major delays for passengers on the Metro-North and Amtrak railroads. In a letter Monday to the Coast Guard, Blumenthal says the problems with the bridge are chronic, noting it failed 16 times in 271 openings during 2013. Blumenthal also is calling on the U.S. Department of Transportation to expedite the states request for funding to replace the bridge. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has called officials, including Blumenthal, to a Crisis Summit Monday morning at the Legislative Office Building to discuss the problem.
