FROM THE NEWSROOM: Plans to launch a taxi service business in Putnam were delayed Wednesday night when the Zoning Commission voted to continue the necessary proposed text amendments and special permit to next month’s meeting. Commission member Liz Thompson explained there are still too many questions about where the Putnam Taxi, LLC vehicles would be able to park in town, which need to be answered by the town attorney. Applicant Rob Freeman explained the dispatch office would be located at 119 School Street in Putnam, but the service would pick up people throughout 14 towns in Northeastern Connecticut, notably excluding Windham— however, the three-taxi fleet could take customers anywhere throughout the county. Freeman explained that despite the red tape in Putnam, he intends to be operating out of Plainfield shortly while awaiting final approval in Putnam—he said all proper permitting is in order in Plainfield. Business Attorney Anna Zubkova said the demand for livery services in Northeastern Connecticut is high, and added that one vehicle will be a wheelchair van, saving elderly and disabled residents the high cost of medical transportation. According to Freeman, the taxi services would be based on a high-tech, home-business model, utilizing fuel-efficient vehicles and transportation methods, and substituting cell phones for traditional radios. Tune in for the full report.
