FROM THE NEWSROOM: Putnam Mayor Tony Falzarano has issued a proclamation declaring the week of September 7 through 13 of 2014 as “Diaper Need Awareness Week,” celebrating the efforts of the Interfaith Human Services of Putnam Diaper Bank of Northeast Connecticut. Deputy Mayor Alma Morey read the proclamation on the WINY Talk Show this morning, alongside Diaper Bank creator Helen Ferland and IHSP President Shawn Johnston. In the proclamation, Falzarano encourages the citizens of the region to “donate generously” to the diaper bank, which serves hundreds of low-income families from Thompson to Plainfield, by distributing diapers and wipes for young children. Ferland says that her “small idea” has blossomed over the last four years through the assistance of IHSP, Daily Bread and other community partners. Community members who wish to contribute can do so through monetary and physical donations at Daily Bread at the Methodist Church on Grove Street in Putnam. A “Jam the Van” event will be held at the first Quinebaug Pride football game of the year at 6:30 p.m. Friday night at the St. Marie Greenhalgh Sports Complex on Wicker Street, where diapers and wipes will be accepted, along with monetary donations. The Diaper Bank provides more than 100,000 diapers to local families annually. Tune in for the full report.
