FROM THE NEWSROOM: The AAA says three out of four drivers believe that hands-free vehicle technology is safe to use, but according to research by the auto clubs Foundation for Traffic Safety, hands-free features may actually distract you more. The AAA says that developers of the technology can make their products safer by making them less complicated. Fran Mayko, a spokesperson for AAA Southern New England and Conn., says that just because hands-free calling technology is billed as safer, it doesnt mean it is. “Hands-free is not risk free when driving, and its pretty clear based on this research that not all voice systems are created equal and many can lead to driver distraction,” she said. Mayko says AAA wants to work with manufacturers to make the technology safer in vehicles. The results of the AAAs research showed that how well the voice activated system works impacted the the drivers distraction level, composing text messages and emails using in-vehicle voice technology was more distracting than using those systems to listen to a message.
