FROM THE NEWSROOM: The Killingly Town Council is holding off on authorizing a resolution to expend $50,000 to repair the high school gymnasium floor until it learns more about whats causing the water damage beneath it, and how costly it will be to correct the issue. The council and school district have been wrestling with why the gym floor in an nearly-brand-new high schools began “cupping” and buckling a few years ago. Professionals later determined that moisture below the floors surface was the cause – but Killingly Town Manager Sean Hendricks says that the monitoring devices installed in the floor in late spring did not provide enough data for a final report. When its completed, that report will help officials determine whether the floor can be corrected with an approximately $40,000 resurfacing job, or if a multi-million dollar replacement of the floor is necessary, due to structural concerns. Until then, Town Council Chairman John Hallbergh says this about the $50,000 resolution – “That item is still on the table; it has not come off the table...because we still do not have the report from UCONN or Mystic Air.” Town Manager Hendricks says that the imperfections in the gym floor are not a safety hazard at this time, and the gym will be fair game for use this school year. The project is not urgent, he said, adding that any work to the gym will have to wait until the summer following the upcoming school year anyway.
