FROM THE NEWSROOM: The Northeastern Connecticut Council of Governments outlined its Regional Hazardous Mitigation plan at Wednesday nights meeting to Putnam Town Administrator Doug Cutler. The plan, which will hopefully be adopted in 2015, aims to implement identified mitigation activities and policies in order to protect peoples lives and property from damage caused by natural hazards in Northeastern Connecticut. The plan was originally submitted to the Federal Emergency Management Agency in 2013, but was rejected due to various deficiencies in the proposed plan. Regional Project Analyst Sam Alexander, who outlined the updated plan to Cutler Wednesday evening, gave an update on what changes were made in order to comply with FEMAs standards – most notably, ensuring quantitative and qualitative data was used to analyze the regions risk. Alexander also spoke about NECCOGs commitment to engaging with the public in regards to the Mitigation Plan, and encourages anyone to see drafts of the plan on the NECCOG website. Cutler expressed some concerns he had about the plan that were specific to Putnam – particularly, that erosion, which is a hazard that was not included in the analysis, is a serious problem that Putnam faces that should be incorporated into the plan. Cutler was confident that these concerns could be added into the Regional Mitigation plan and would be an overall positive action for the community. Tune in for the full report.
