FROM THE NEWSROOM: The positive and negative projections for the future of the Wheelabrator Ash Landfill in Putnam were discussed at a recent Board of Selectmen meeting, where company representative Don Musial gave a presentation to local officials. The good news, Musial says, is that new projects continue to advance within the landfill, bringing the facility further into the 21st century; they include an advanced metal recovery system that can pull out small, recyclable metals such as paperclips and pieces of pens from the waste stream, and a joint venture with a company called INASHCO to site-systems at central locations in the U.S. Musial believes these projects will bring in new technology and mechanical jobs, keep the landfill competitive, and maintain the rate of revenue coming to the business and town. However, Musial said it is unfortunate that Brayton Point Energy in Somerset, Massachusetts – which has provided a waste stream to Wheelabrator for nearly a decade – is scheduled to close in 2017; he said that while there may be plans to convert Brayton from a coal to a natural gas plant, Wheelabrator is prepared for that potential loss in revenue to the landfill in upcoming years. With the future of ash landfills in Connecticut uncertain, Musial said Wheelabrator has at least another ten years of permitted life left in Putnam, and he hopes that life can be expanded for another 20 years. Tune in for the full report.
