FROM THE NEWSROOM: Thompson school district officials are celebrating their high schools high-ranking graduation rate; Thompson’s Tourtellotte Memorial High School recently finished third from the top of its Demographic Reference Group with a four-year cohort graduation rate of 89.7%, which is 4.2% above the state average. Superintendent Dr. Michael Jolin said this is great news: Dr. Penny Hebert, Principal of Tourtellotte, said that Thompson’s high graduation rate is due to excellent teaching staff, individualized instruction, small class sizes which enable teachers to monitor progress and individualize instruction to meet student needs, implementation of the student advisory program, students weekly meetings with an advisor who helps them self-advocate and self-monitor their progress through the graduation requirements, Student Success Plans, the Credit Recovery Program, good communication and a positive learning environment. Superintendent Jolin also suggested the importance of the Thompson Ecumenical Empowerment Group in that it has provided many social and economic supports to help students stay in school and graduate. Other Northeastern Connecticut districts with high schools -- including Putnam and Killingly -- performed significantly below Thompson in a list released by the state for the same Demographic Reference Group; Putnam came in with a 77.1% graduation rate, and Killingly with a 74.9% graduation rate rate, both below the state average.
