FROM THE NEWSROOM: To better conform with changes to Conn. state law, the Killingly school district will soon be seeing revised policies in the areas of bullying, medication, and suspected neglect or abuse of children. Superintendent Kevin Farr says that some of these changes will require additional training and oversight, with one example being the policy regarding sports and concussions, as well as the administration of EpiPens, which is now able to be done by trained personnel other than the school nurse if the nurse is not available. The two other policies regarded more personal matters, such as the addition of teen dating violence to the hazing and bullying section, as well as changes to protocol when a student is suspected to be at risk of abuse or neglect. There was language in the policy saying that in all cases, parents or guardians must be notified, but Farr noted that there are some unfortunate situations where parents are the ones suspected to be the abusers. These revisions will grant the administration the ability to determine who to call other than the Department of Children and Families, which is always a mandatory call. However, the superintendent stresses that if a student is abused by a staff member, it is a guarantee that the parent will get a call. These were forwarded to the board of education by the policy sub-committee, and are said to hopefully go into effect in the near future. Tune in for the full report.
