FROM THE NEWSROOM: (UPDATE) Several youths had been asleep before escaping from a cabin that burned to the ground in the Yale-Meyers Woods in Eastford early Saturday morning, according to Eastford Fire Marshal Richard Whitehouse. Whitehouse says that one of six young people, who have not been named, sustained a burn injury to his or her hand during the event. The kids were otherwise unharmed, he says. As reported, QVEC Dispatch says eight fire departments from throughout the region were dispatched to first alarm fire; upon arrival at just after 3 a.m., firefighters reported that the cabin had already burned to the ground and all departments except for the Eastford and Bungay companies were turned back. According to information on the Eastford Fire Departments website, the structure fire was located at the Yale Forest Cabins off of Center Pike Road and Kozey Road, more than two miles into the woods. The fire marshal says that the fire likely spread from an iron grated grill near the one room cabin on an outside deck. Whitehouse says that officials are leaning toward an accidental cause, and while they are not pursuing an investigation into the fire itself, they are looking into why the juveniles were there. He says the kids awoke to find the cabin was on fire. Eastford fire officials wrote that the scene was initially turned over to the the Eastford Fire Marshal and the Connecticut State Police, however, firefighters returned at about 5:30 in the morning to do overhaul on hot spots that had rekindled. No ambulances were requested at the scene, according to dispatch.
