FROM THE NEWSROOM: (UPDATE) Wood chip debris that was ignited by heat caused a fire that broke out at the Exeter Energy plant in Sterling this morning. Firefighters brought the fire at the Sterling plant under control approximately 2.5 hours after it was first reported. Nearly a dozen fire departments responded to a fire at 10 Exeter Drive in Sterling early this morning. A call for a commercial fire alarm at the Exeter Energy plant, located in the Sterling Industrial park, came into dispatch at 3:35 a.m. Fire Marshal Jim Sweet said it was “not a frightening fire at all.” “The fire started on the upper level near the north side of the boilers,” said Sweet. Exeter Energy, a tire incinerator plant, is listed as a business that specializes in environmental and ecological products and services. Sweet says that when wood chips are combined with the shredded tire material some miss the hopper, and the heat from the boilers ignites the debris. Sweet says fire officials expect there is some electrical damage where the fire broke out. QVEC Dispatchers said the fire was deemed under control at 5:03 a.m., though fire crews remained on the scene for a time afterward. The Sterling, Oneco, Atwood Hose, Central Village, South Killingly, Plainfield, Moosup, Western Coventry, Central Coventry and Foster fire departments, as well as American Rehab Unit and Central Coventry Ambulance, responded to the scene. This is the third reported fire at the plant since January of 2013, with the same cause. No injuries have been reported, according to officials.
