FROM THE NEWSROOM: With many school budgets in a holding pattern, or scaling back on increases, some have had to find creative ways to keep extra curricular activities in place, including the Woodstock Public Schools. With the fall sports figures made public, it would cost $143 per player if 40 students were to make the soccer team, and $124 per student for cross country, if 45 students participate in the program. If, for some reason, fewer students sign up or do not make the teams after try-outs, education officials say those figures would increase. Cliff Davis, a School Board Member who is employed by QRS in Putnam is trying to find a solution. “One of the things that was cut was paying for school sports. It was about $38,000, and we had to cut over $700,000, and so that was some of it,” said Davis. “And so now, what will have to happen is that people will be paying for participating.” His company has offered to pay at least half of the amount per student, or in certain situations the entire amount, to allow kids to participate in sports programs. “Im trying to come up with creative ways to solve this,” said Davis. “My company feels very passionately about ensuring that every kid who wants to play can play, or every kid that is able to play can play, and financial hardship should not be a reason not to.” The proposal, which would see the Putnam business match funds for students, will be reviewed and discussed at next months Board of Education meeting. Tune in for the full report.
