FROM-THE POISON OF A SECOND SON! His partner reached the top of the stairs and entered the bedroom where the couple was sleeping soundly; he moved silently across the room and started quietly putting items from the dressing table into his bag and pockets. Suddenly the silence was shattered by a babies cry, “Mama! Mama!” the intruder froze, his partner downstairs stilled his hand as he was about to pick up a silver candlestick. “Mama! Mama!” the shrill noise echoed around the silent house once again, Annie awoke first; she sleepily reached out and turned up the lamp as William stirred. Annie let out a scream of terror as she saw the hulking figure in the room, his shadow on the wall made him appear even more monstrous, William sat up with a start, “What is it Annie, did you have a nightmare?” Annie was so petrified with fear she couldn’t speak, she pointed to the door which the intruder had just ran. As William looked at the door he heard the sounds of someone running downstairs, and leapt out of bed to give chase, the intruder ran straight to the front door and was fumbling for the handle in the darkness as William caught up to him, “Got you!” he shouted in triumph. The massive intruder swung around, roughly pushing William to the floor kicking out at him as he fell, William felt the boot graze his cheek and struggled to get to his feet as he tried to grab him again. He then became aware of a movement behind him, but before he had time to react, he let out a scream of anguish as he felt an agonizing pain in his back as he was savagely stabbed; gasping in pain he fell to the floor, and saw the door open and two figures running out as he lost consciousness. The intruders disappeared into the night with their loot without a backward glance. Annie had now recovered her wits, and with a mother’s instinct hurried to where the children slept, she’d heard a scuffling noise and a melee taking place downstairs, also the scream of agony. But she didn’t know who was crying out and her priority was he children’s safety. When Annie opened the children’s bedroom door she turned up the lamp, and was relieved to see baby sleeping peacefully. She picked up Richard who was standing there with tears running down his cheeks, Almost instantly he closed his eyes and went back to sleep in his mother’s arms. An eerie silence had now descended on the house; Annie placed the child into his bed as fears for William’s safety came into her mind. She tiptoed to the top of the stairs and called out in a hoarse whisper, ‘William! William are you there?” she was met with silence. Annie crept slowly down the stairs, “William!” she called out again. Still no reply, and in the dim light from the lamp in the hall, she saw the front door was open and slowly edged towards it, thinking William had chased after the intruder, she felt something wet on her bare feet and almost stumbled over a figure lying on the floor, she recoiled in horror not knowing if it was friend or foe. “William!”
