FS: Sargent 409 VBM with smooth sole This is a nice example of one of Sargents premium planes, made between 1909 and 1918. The VBM or Very Best Made had extra thick castings for strength and heft. The handles were mahogany. The cutter was thicker than most, measuring nearly 0.100. The frog was fully machined to provide good support for the cutter. This particular plane has few apologies, but in the interest of full disclosure, are listed here: - The bed has not been painted, but chips along the tops of the cheeks were touched up with real asphaltum japanning which was baked on. - The tote had a partial crack which was repaired by me with epoxy. - There is a shallow blemish on the left cheek, but I cannot tell what caused it. A previous owner may have etched out an earlier owners name. - There is some light fuzziness on the surface of the chip breaker. Id hate to call it pitting, but some polishing may be required to make it shine (but not necessary for use). - The lever cap may have been replaced. It does have the correct Sargent VBM trademark. However, the number 9 is cast into the back side, which is the model number for the Sargent VBM Shaw Patent plane, their super premium model.
