FT. CARSON AMERICAN RED CROSS and DENTAC FORT CARSON DENTAL ASSISTANT PROGRAM MISSION: To provide a training program to better serve the Fort Carson community while supporting the Dental Activity-Colorado (DENTAC). Criteria and Guidelines The following criteria/guidelines were established to help determine those individuals best qualified for the Red Cross Dental Assistant training program. Final selection for the training program will be based on the needs of the Fort Carson DENTAC. The Ft. Carson American Red Cross will publicize the program. An interviewing board will make the selection of trainees. Applicant must be at least 18 years of age, have a military ID card, be an American Citizen, and have a high school diploma or equivalent. There is an in-processing with orientations, CPR training, immunizations and DENTAC orientation that is required prior to the beginning of the program. Applicant should possess good hand/eye coordination and should not be fearful of blood or needles. The following are minimum requirements which must be maintained at all times: a. Satisfactory performance ratings by dentists. b. Acceptable and professional relationships with clinic personnel. c. Adherence to ethical rules governing Red Cross volunteers. Applicant should display good health/hygiene habits and should be willing to per DENTAC requirements: a. Wear nails trimmed short and free of nail color. Acrylic nails are not permitted. b. Wear long hair pulled back in a pony tail, bun, etc. c. Wear a Red Cross name tag. d. Wear safety glasses, mask, and gloves when treating patients and cleaning instruments. e. Wear white nursing or athletic shoes. f. Wear no rings during patient treatment. All other jewelry must be conservative and kept to a minimum. Scheduled attendance is MANDATORY: a. The first month of the course will primarily be spent in the classroom. b. The remaining time will be in the clinic. Normal duty hours will be 0645-1615, Monday – Friday. c. If you become ill and cannot work you must contact your clinical supervisor immediately and all work must be made up. Applicant must have reliable transportation to ensure timely arrival for duty. Applicant must be willing to observe all clinic and Red Cross policies and governing guidelines. Applicant must be aware that some training may require prolonged standing, sitting, and bending while assisting the dental officer. Involuntary removal of a student from this program can occur through mutual agreement between the Red Cross and the Dental Clinic program supervisor. This training course exists primarily to provide ancillary support to the DENTAC. All training and work assignments will be made with clinic needs taking first priority. Applicant must have a negative TB test within the last 12 months (annual update required) and a current tetanus immunization. Applicants will be required to submit to a 3-injection series Recombivax vaccination (Hepatitis B vaccination). Applicant must complete the entire program in order to receive a certificate of training.
