FUN POTATO FACTS • The Inca people of Peru grew potatoes in the Andes Mountains in about 200 BC – they used potatoes to treat injuries, placed raw slices on broken bones, ate them with other foods to prevent indigestion, and thought it made childbirth easier • There were many other folklore about the potato – a peeled potato in the pocket was believed to cure a toothache and a dried potato worn around the neck would help rheumatism • In parts of Europe and America it was thought that warts could be cured by rubbing them with a raw potato • The ancient Inca Indians also used the potato as a measure of time – units of time were correlated to how long it took a potato to cook • Potatoes were introduced to Britain and Ireland in the late 1500s, but it didn’t go so well at first as many people blamed them for diseases and condemned them because they weren’t mentioned in the Bible
