FUNNY THINGS IN LIFE Losing your vision can seem like it would be a time full of sadness and loss. It can be. However, I would like to share with you some of the funny things that have happened to me as I have learned to live without much vision. Several things have happened to me while being led around by both friends and family. Kathy,A good friend of mine ,took me Christmas shopping last year. She had not yet led me around so it was a very teachable moment, you might say. We went to Walmart and found what I was looking for and checked out. As we were hurriedly walking through the checkout isles, she ran me smack dab into the counter. It was as if I was hit right in the gut. We lost it. I announced do everyone, “She is new at this, she’ll learn.“ My wonderful mom, without who I would never make it has been my best friend. She has been awesome as a leader. However, there have been some things that have happened with her that were funny. We went to the eye doctor the first time after I lost my vision, and she walked out of the room after the doctor was finished and left me in the room. The doctor said,” Here Judy, I’ll help you.” We all had a good laugh at that one. I have been walked into poles, cars and off curbs. This was all before my orientation and mobility training. As you will find out, it gets funnier. Orientation and mobility training was always full of mishaps. After training how to find my way around a church building for a few weeks, while wearing a blindfold, so as not to see anything but darkness. I was instructed to find my way around the church and get to a certain room. While trying to find my way, and feeling very lost, a man stopped me and asked, “Do you know how to get to room number 23?” There I was , wearing my beautiful blindfold , which included some stuck on eyeballs to make it fun, and my white cane as big as day, after he asked me that I couldn’t believe it. I was thinking …really? Are you kidding me? Instead of saying something like, “Are you crazy?”” or “Seriously?”” But instead I simply said, “No, I really don’t know where that is.” What are the chances I would run into someone who was lost? My instructor told us previously that we could ask for assistance if we needed. I get a guy that was lost. …REALLY???? Another funny Occasion that brought us a laugh was when I took my next independent route for orientation and mobility training. Evan, the nice person I was training with, and I had practiced walking around a neighborhood for a few weeks. It finally was time for us to walk around the neighborhood by ourselves AND REACH A CERTAIN DESTINATION. I was to go one way and Evan would start out the other way. Evan took off first. I followed her to the first cross street, We both had to cross the sane street to get started. Evan wanted to cross first, so I let her. As she stood there waiting for silence, one car cane by and then she took off across the intersection, She was fast on her way. Now it was my turn. As I waited, One car went by, then another, then another, 23 cars and a prayer or two later, I finally heard silence Really? What a way to start my walk, I continued on my way, Knowing that Evan would for sure get to her destination first. I’m very competitive, so that didn’t sit well with me, However, I kept going. As I approached the last corner of my journey, I heard Evan coming towards me on the same sidewalk. I asked her if that was her and she said it was, She also mentioned that she was lost, I was thinking, if I help her I might not win, What should a girl do? I did the right thing and helped her. We both went on our way. I finally got to my destination, and stood there waiting for my instructor. As I stood there, I heard footsteps running towards me very quickly. My instructor Steffani said, “Judy, where are you?” I was right there standing behind a tree…DUH! She was afraid I got lost, and I was there the whole time. It was time for another big laugh. We laughed about that and the thousand cars I had to wait for when I first got started. The good thing was that I beat Evan! There are many more stories I could share. Like the other day when I accidently punched my radiation technician in the chest, or the tim e a child asked me how that silly white cane helped me because she just couldn’t get it. There will be many more funny things that happen. As you go through life, try to find things to laugh about. If you do you might just make it.
