Maureen Reed said she was cleaning inside the home when she saw a bright light and smelled smoke. Reed, who owns the home at 89 Chapel St. with her husband, said she called 911. Three residents were home at the time, she added. Reed is the mother of teenager Connor Reed, who was afflicted with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, a rare inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, prompting a large outpouring of support from the community last year. Everyone was able to get out of the house safely, along with the family’s two dogs and a cat.The Red Cross was called to assist the family with housing, but Civil Defense also responded to help with shelter until Red Cross workers could get there, Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Czentnar said. The fire was reported at 1:43 p.m. and fire crews were on scene within three minutes. When crews arrived, fire and smoke could be seen on the first floor, Czentnar said. A total of 20 firefighters responded to the call, including some volunteer companies. The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes, Czentnar said. The cause of the fire was unknown Monday afternoon, Czentnar said. There is significant fire damage to the first floor, and smoke and some water damage to the second floor and basement. The town’s utility department was called in to disconnect the power. Snow was falling, but lightly as crews worked at the house. Czentnar said the weather didn’t affect extinguishing the fire, but the cold temperatures posed a hazard for crews if icing built up from the water on the roads.
