Face It The United States “hopes to shrink the Army from 520,000 to 440,000 troops, the country’s smallest standing force since before World War II,” according to Mark Thompson in TIME magazine. The U.S. Defense budget plan for 2015 was announced on Feb. 24. The U.S. Army plans to reduce cost and improve readiness for world situations that are becoming more “unpredictable.” They seem hesitant to engage in “lengthy wars,” but focused on the agility to mobilize. The number of Special Forces will be increased despite the regular troop reduction. Newer F-35 warplanes will replace A-10s developed in the 1970s. Unmanned Global Hawk drones will replace U-2 spy planes, which are being retired. Korea still depends on U.S. military protection. There is tension among China, Japan, and Korea, especially over territorial disputes. North Korea is unstable with a young and inexperienced leader. Can we save ourselves if something happens? Let’s face it. Heaven only helps those who help themselves.
