Facebook Art Jewelry Challenge was started by Donna Greenberg, to capture thediversity of what is happening around the world of art jewellery. I was nominated by Leonie Westbrook and Nadja Maher, friends, colleagues and amazing jewellers. For 5 days I will show some of my jewellery, and each day I will also nominate another artist to show us his/her jewellery. DAY THREE: Works from my geomorphing collection which was shown in 2009 at ZuDesign and 2010 at JamFactory Living in Australia has influenced my work profoundly. The rocks and minerals which occur in abundance here ignited a passion for their unique crystalline formations, leading me to process and cut my own stones. Because I have a strong technical background I am able to experiment with new applications. Combinations of materials are selected, perceptible by the senses, tangible structures opposing internal lines and formations, colours harmonising with each other. Common materials sourced in the outback or at minerals and rock collectors’ exhibitions hold value for me because of their visual uniqueness. Slicing into them I discover structures, patterns and colours traces of their geological history hidden in the layers. The crystalline structures intrigue with their geometry, eliciting further experiments, in form, making visible the fractal constructs of the stones. By designing and constructing both jewellery and objects that reference and utilize gems and minerals I investigate the term precious as it often attributed to certain materials.
