Facebook Friends, It has been a while since my last update - time, like life, just keeps racing by. By way of update: Vicki has/is still losing weight. She is now down to 125, from a high of 176 and a pretty stable average of 157. She simply has no appetite. This is beginning to affect her ability to heal, as she is again getting skin bruises and tears, and is always tired. Other than weight, the one thing we have most problems with is her sugar. As long as Vicki is on some of her medications (particularly prednisone, but also valcyte), we will have to check her sugar. These medications tend to cause uncontrollable blood sugar levels. For the most part, a health person should see blood sugar levels of between 70 and 100 after fasting (so before breakfast). These should stabilize over time and does not mean she is now diabetic. Outside of the transplant, she still has ankle problems. As you will likely remember, Vicki broke her ankle in December of 2011. Somehow, she re-injured it in September/October of last year. She needs to again have it operated on. Because of the damage to her ankle, she is likely not eligible for ankle replacement (like her sister jenny – although we have 1 more opinion to get), but will have to have her ankle fused. This is causing her severe pain, and requires her to wear a brace and use a walker (although she pretty much refuses to use the walker). And then there is the mind Vicki had some mind issues prior to the transplant. Since the transplant, they did do an MRI and CT scan to evaluate any issues. She was diagnosed with progressively moderate cerebral and cerebellar diffuse atrophy (which essentially means that her brain has atrophied someplace between normal aging and Alzheimer’s, and that it is progressive). In likelihood it will not get better. Consequently, she cannot be left alone, cannot remember much about what is going on (although she is able to keep some things straight), and asks lots and lots of questions. We will be seeing some specialists about this, to see if they have ideas. Sometimes these things sound like all is bad, especially since we focus on the negatives. But Vicki does get out to see people, and is generally doing well. Just thought you all might want to know.
