Facebook friends, I need advice and I am soliciting all your suggestions! One of my classes is taught by an adjunct instructor who assigns a LOT of homework, including a “one page, single-spaced” response to every reading we’re assigned, which doesn’t sound like much but often adds up to 2,000 words a week. These responses constitute 15% of our grade. I dont mind doing all this work, per se, but eventually I noticed that the instructor had stopped grading it or returning it to us -- the last one I got back was from September 3rd, and Ive handed in seventeen responses since then. Yesterday I finally emailed him to ask what the deal was, and he wrote back: Good question. Keep handing them in! I basically skim through them and keep them in semi-ordered piles for calculating the grades later in the semester. Unfortunately I dont have time to respond to all of them individually, but they hopefully help to inspire your own thoughts and class discussion. In other words: he doesnt read them. He makes us write 2,000 words a week, print it out (he insists on hard copies), hand it over to him, and then doesnt even read it. Am I overreacting, or is this monumentally unfair? This is bullshit, right? But what should I do about it? Is it worth trying to argue about it with him, or will that just make him hate me? Should I take it to someone higher up, or will the whole department then think Im a lazy whiner who will do anything to get out of an assignment? Just to reiterate, I DONT have a problem doing a lot of written homework. I just have a problem putting a lot of effort into writing essays that will never get read by any other human.
