Facebook page, aug.10- Dear friends and followers, The last two weeks have been amazingly different for me. Two weeks ago I began a week of silence in honor of those who are suffering from the effects of climate change around the world and have no voice. The second week filled with meeting upon meeting regarding fundraising, future events, rallies, internal structure, and all the other issues that keep us moving from one place to the next along our route. For those of you who know me, a week of silence is a big stretch:-) I used a notebook when a direct answer had to be given, but on the whole I tried not to communicate in order to listen and observe. May I state the obvious: you hear more and see much more when you do this! I spent one day away from the March trying to feel what it would be like not to be able to speak on issues of such great importance to me and my family. I experienced frustration, anger and great sadness during this day. Where is the civilized worlds compassion! How can we continue to do business as usual and ignore the suffering that business as usual creates? Corporate greed, uneducated and misinformed legislators, and a public that will not accept the seriousness of whats ahead for this world... a sad and deadly commentary on our times. So, we March. We march for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the 1% in the corporate world who refuse to see the havoc they are creating through greed and obfuscation of the truth, for the leaders and legislators on all levels of government here in America and around the world who will not look at the truth and act on our behalf and for the people like you and me here at home and abroad who still dont get it! We March! Iowa is an amazing state! Not only does it have approximately 30% of its energy produced by wind and other sustainable energy, but it passed civil rights laws before the Supreme Court took action, produced the first delicious apple variety and supported George Washington Carver in his study of the peanut! We had a fabulous rally on the steps of the Iowa Capitol yesterday. About 150 of us marched through the streets of Des Moines to the capitol chanting, carrying signs, singing and having a fabulous time. The people of Des Moines care about their environment and are knowledgeable about the climate issues facing Iowa. They are particularly concerned about the proposed Bakken oil pipeline which would cut diagonally through beautiful Iowa farmland land, beginning in North Dakota and ending at the Gulf of Mexico. We heard from the mayor of Des Moines, two Senators from the state legislature as well as from activist organizations and our own marchers. This was the best rally yet!!! My love to you all! Kathe
