Faces we see, hearts we know not. Spanish Proverb Do you really know who someone else is or what someone else thinks? It’s not likely. You only get to know and see what someone allows you to know and see, and this may not be reality, but rather a mere charade. Most people are very careful about the image that they portray to everyone else. Only a handful of people are allowed to know the real person, the person without the protective shield that is up when we are around others. This is just a human characteristic that the majority of people come by naturally, and because of this trait, it is important that you learn to “read” people. You have to be able to discern what is really going on in their heart. This takes practice and skill, but it can be done. There are many books on the market which go into detail about how to read people’s expressions, body language, and small tell signs. Just as poker players learn to read their opponents, the warrior should make it part of his training to learn how to read the people around him. He should become an expert in the art of reading his fellow man. Learn how to tell if someone is bluffing, lying, being deceitful, or being completely honest. Learn the small eye movements and hand gestures that are unconscious and common among most humans. Develop that x-ray vision that allows you to see past the face and into the heart and mind of those that you meet.
