Fair and impartial courts play a critical, stabilizing role in our democracy. Courts exist to protect people and their rights, to guarantee fairness and justice for all. And in Ohio, judges are elected. Things to look for in a good judge include: • Integrity: A judge should be honest, upright, and committed to the rule of law. • Professional competence: A judge should have a keen intellect, extensive legal knowledge, and strong writing skills. • Judicial temperament: A judge must be neutral, decisive, respectful, and composed. • Experience: A judge should have a strong record of professional excellence in the law. • Service: A judge should be committed to public service and the administration of justice. Judicial candidates are not allowed to tell you how they might rule in cases that would come before them. So, how can you figure out how to cast your vote in judicial races? The League of Women Voters can help. Check out the information about the judicial candidates on our on-line Voter Information Bulletin: Vote411.org. Once youve made your decisions, you can have Vote411 email or text you your selections. The Columbus Bar Association also provides information about judicial candidates. The Bar Association conducts a judicial preference poll, asking all lawyers in the county to rate the candidates, and publishes the results. judgethecandidates.org/judicial/index.php
