Faith is a relationship with the Word which develops like a tender plant from a seed. This means that we do not receive the promises from God in the way we obtain something from a machine. The ‘believing’ element of the faith-process does not simply involve finding a relevant promise or name of God, fulfilling the appropriate conditions, and believing that God will fulfil it. We have already seen that God tests our faith both to prove that it is genuine and also to develop it. And we know that the enemy persistently and aggressively opposes all developing faith. To receive God’s promises, we need to persist in our belief, to go on clinging to Jesus, to keep on depending on God’s faithfulness. We need to be determined to press on in faith until we receive God’s promise.
