Faith is a word often overused, almost to the point that love is - TopicsExpress

Faith is a word often overused, almost to the point that love is overused. But what is faith? Hebrews 11:1 gives us the biblical definition. It is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. But what does this mean? It is substantial; there is substance to our faith. Our faith is not a fleeting thing. It has staying power. There is meat on the bone of our faith. When there is not meat on the bone it is because we have not exercised our faith and it has grown feeble, weak, and atrophied. Our faith must meet God at the point of action. He calls us to action. This is exercising our faith. Hopefully, once we do this a few times we will realize that God is always going with us when He sends us out. Then we can go farther the next time as we continue to invest more and more of ourselves in Him. But faith requires something from God as well, or there would be no reason to have faith in the first place. God provides us with everything we need; He is the source of us and of everything. He is our provider. We dont yet see all of His plan for us. We dont know where He will send us or what He will ask of us. But we see in scripture that every time God makes a promise, He keeps it. There is not one example from the Bible where He does not stay true to His word, not one. Many things God promised have come true. For others the time for realization has not yet come. It is from these past events that we draw our faith. We then reinvest that faith in God that He will follow through on the promises He has made concerning our own future. God is not a wishing well. Hoping in God requires certainty and assuredness on our part. We stand on His promises. Faith is an investment in God, and it is the best investment we can ever make. Faith in God always leads to His grace being bestowed upon us. When we invest faith in our Heavenly Father we are placing ourselves in Gods hands, the safest place we will ever be. Sometimes God calls us to act; sometimes He calls us to sit back and let Him handle things. Both require an investment of faith. When we act, we often do so while looking over our shoulder hoping God is poised and ready to rescue us because we know we are in over our heads. However, when we dont act we seem to worry about Gods ability to handle our situation. We worry that He wont be able to take care of us. We worry that He wont do the things we want Him to do, or that He wont do them in the way that we want. Faith is foundational and essential; it is where our walk with Christ begins. We are encouraged to seek Christ in faith. We are encouraged to seek the greatest gifts in faith. We are encouraged to seek Gods face in faith. Exercise your faith. Realize the potential you have in Christ. Be proactive in your pursuit of a closer relationship with God. Take a leap of faith toward God. He will catch you; He promises.
