Faiths Final Report Many of you have been awaiting these reports, again thank you for being so patient. Lets start from the very beginning for those who are just joining us. Faith arrived in our care mid December from Laidley QLD horse sales. She was assessed by our Gold Coast vet and found to be in reasonably good condition (please read the field notes below) and was Hendra vaccinated. Within 3 hours of receiving her vaccine Faith developed 2 large welt marks on her belly and 1 between the injection site and her shoulder. These marks slowly went away over a few days. On Christmas Day a clear nasal discharge was noticed and our vet was called right away. On Boxing Day there was a slight bloody trickle coming from her nose, again vet called (please read the clinical notes below). Faith passed away December 27th in the early hours of the morning and was buried later that day. Over the course of the past (almost) 2 weeks faith was exhumed, and an autopsy carried out and numerous other tests to get to the bottom of what caused her tragic and very quick passing. Below you will find the Autopsy report + notes. Faiths cause of death has been put down to Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia (IMTP) which ultimately led to Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC). What causes this you will likely be asking ? There a 5 things known to cause TP: - black snake bite/venom: tests however have been done to rule this out. - rat poisoning: again tests have been done and ruled this out. - EIA: again ruled out. - EVA: ruled out as not found in Australia - reaction to a vaccine: Faith had only ever been hendra vaccinated (did not receive any other vaccine while in our care). The below reports will now be forwarded to the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA). We would like to say a very big thankyou to our incredible GC vet Christine Perry for her dedication, love, strength and support. If not for Christine we would not have the answers we have today. We would also like to thank Zoetis for their support during this tough time and for being just as eager to get to the bottom of Faiths cause of death. Where to from now? Well we dont really know! The passing of Faith is still very raw for us, we are still yet to grieve her passing all while we nurse another very sick horse due to Immune Mediated Acute Hemorrhagic Purpura which has been linked to the strangles vaccine (refer to previous post).
