Falcon School District 49 parents, Our partners in area law enforcement would like the district to share with you information on a scam has been developed and is affecting our community. In this phone scam, police say criminals are reported to have called, saying theyre with a cartel and have a member of your family held hostage. The caller then threatens that if you dont give them money, theyre going to hurt or even kill your loved one. The phone call can seem authentic because the caller typically knows a frightening amount of personal information about who they claim to have hostage. Law enforcement officers say the criminals are getting this information from social media sites. This scam has been going on in other states, but recently showed up in the Colorado Springs area, to include within our DIstrict 49 boundaries. There have been several instances reported to local law enforcement. Law enforcement is warning the public to be cautious about what information is readily available on all social media sites. Most of the calls are originating from a 312 area code. The El Paso County Sheriffs Office is continuing to investigate cases, and urges the community to contact us if this type of call is received.
