Falling Short of Our Potentials: Up, Down, IIN, or Out? By: Tatia Berry and Enrique Castro Many of us are in the same predicament, where we are questioning our capabilities of achievement; and the root of the solution is to ask ourselves why? FEAR! We are afraid of taking something on because we feel as if we lack knowledge or confidence, or both, to get the job done. Or maybe fear of success – the unknown and perceived expectations. People are more afraid of being able to do something because it makes them vulnerable… to failure, to finding out who they really are, who they may become, and also because it bestows responsibility to serve others. If we learn to accept it, our potential will reveal itself. A number of us would rather settle for something with predictable results, something comfortable, than to choose something unknown and have to worry about the consequences. If the choices you make lead you through a path of uncertainty then, so be it! Everything is a choice, and the only wrong choice is the one you don’t make! Embrace it because you just never know what it might bring to the table. We have to believe in our-selves and know that we are genuinely entitled to success and happiness…and that maybe the real solution is to question what makes you happy and follow your heart. Maybe you are riding a roller-coaster. One moment you are confident that everything will be okay - when you are truly present and everything makes sense. Then it happens. You start to compare yourself to others and their success, and it can be extremely discouraging. Witnessing the accomplishments of our peers can either encourage or deflate our confidence. “Comparison is the thief of joy” and when we compare ourselves to others, even those in similar situations, it can either give us a sense of liberation, or it can prevent us from moving forward. It stops us dead in our tracks because we try to compare our insides to others outsides – and that just isn’t real. FEAR is false evidence appearing real – and we make stuff up all the time. Other reasons as to why we don’t propel to our potentials include lack of support. The opinions of friends and family can cause a drastic derailment at the changing points of our lives. It is imperative to surround yourself with supportive people whom you can trust and will advise you in a positive manner.
