Falmouth Defeats Brewster, 7-3 Posted on July 23, 2014 by Colleen Loftus Colleen Loftus/Web Reporter The Commodores are back on track, taking a 7-3 win over the Whitecaps. Falmouth finally succeeded in connecting at the plate, stringing together hits that would eventually lead to the team’s victory. Falmouth took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, as Cameron O’Brien reached home off a fielder’s choice from Audie Afenir (Oral Roberts). Brewster tied the score in the next inning, as Gio Brusa (Pacific) knocked a RBI single to left-center. The Whitecaps took the early lead in the top of the fifth as Luke Lowery (East Carolina) sent a solo home run over the left field fence. The Commodores were down 2-1, hoping to get the bats swinging. Falmouth’s rambunctious comeback began with Conner Hale’s (Louisiana State) two run home run in the bottom of the sixth. Up 3-2, Brewster’s starting pitcher Andrew Naderer (Grand Canyon) hit O’Brien with a pitch. Boomer White (Texas A&M) then reached first on a bunt single. After a wild pitch to Jake Madsen (Ohio), both O’Brien and White moved into scoring position. With a 1-2 count, Madsen cracked a two RBI double to right-center field. The Commodores led 5-2 with no outs in the inning as Afenir stepped into the batter’s box. Afenir reached second on an error by Whitecaps’ third baseman Kevin Martir (Maryland), allowing Madsen to reach home from second. Falmouth took a 6-2 lead, having scored five runs through three hits and one error. By the time the Whitecaps could react, the score had skyrocketed against them. They managed to reel in one more run in the top of the eighth, but were then answered by Afenir’s RBI double in the later half of the inning. The final score read 7-3 in favor of Falmouth. The Commodores dominated all aspects of play against the Whitecaps. The team totaled ten hits in 33 at-bats, with seven RBIs. Starting pitcher Alex Young (Texas Christian) pitched five innings for the Commodores, striking out seven batters with a 1.57 ERA. Relief pitcher Ryan Moseley (Texas Tech) was credited with the win tonight, striking out three batters and allowing only one hit in two innings. Madsen hit best in the Falmouth lineup, going three for four at the plate. He managed to find the open holes in the outfield, sending two balls along the left line and one into right-center. Madsen recorded one single, two doubles, and one RBI. The Commodores now hold a 20-15 record, and hope to end their “win one/lose one” streak of games.
