Nov. 11, 2014: In preparing for the series on dramatic voices, I must touch on the subject of open throat, allowing the vowels to alter when ascending higher in pitch. We CANNOT pronounce pure vowels to the top of the voice. The good coaches, vocal instructors, and conductors know this, but there are still some who insist on having singers over-pronounce to the point that the throat closes. In truth, altered vowels sound more like the language acoustically than if one attempts to pronounce pure vowels to the top of the voice. Acoustical science has proven that we cannot do this. If you listen to this later recording of Kirsten Flagstad, who knew her voice quite well, you will hear that the neutral schwa vowel was employed to keep an open colorful and hauntingly beautiful tonal quality toward the upper range. Here she is at age 62. Enjoy! Best. David youtube/watch?v=FUPUXGF07Mo
