False Self Image(mask we wear) The following masks are ways we cope with the pain and shame about our true selves. You may notice these in yourself or other people in your life. If other people use these to shame you, be aware of it and reject the shame. Don’t take it on by recognizing it is their stuff, not yours. Denial – We refuse to deal with the truth by either not admitting it exists or by not dealing with it. Repression – We repress emotions and feel numb instead. Often happens when our parents (who are themselves shame-bound) can’t tolerate emotional expression in us, so they shame our emotions. The easiest way for a child to deal with this is to repress the emotion altogether and not feel. Dissociation – This is the ego defense used when one has experienced severe forms of abuse. Uses denial and regression but also adds some form of imagination used as a distraction from the painful reality. Depersonalization – We have an out of body experience where we disconnect from ourselves, feel disconnected from our inner experiences, and experience ourselves as an object rather than a person.
