By now many if not ALL of you reading this will have heard about the horrible death of the lovely Beverly Carter. The events of the last few days have overlapped with the month that our industry usually focuses on REALTOR safety issues. This topic is actually an EVERY DAY reality in an active agents life. This personal news story has highlighted this fact for everyone else. I am blessed with wonderful clients and I have worked very hard to build a business based on referrals. It is my beloved career and I love what I do as I imagine Beverly Carter did too. The nature of any business that deals with the unknown public will always have risk. The Real Estate Industry is just full of SO MANY GREATER risks every day than the general caring public realizes. You would not believe the stories I could tell and I am very careful. You would not believe what people feel free to say to me and my peers. You would not believe how many nice people think it is OKAY to refuse to sign in at an Open House. Yes, there are best practices and safety tips, but it is time for the general public to understand that we deserve basic professional respect and courtesy. When we ask for simple, reasonable safeguards to protect ourselves AND OUR CLIENTS AND THEIR HOMES, do not think of it as prying or us just trying to capture information to harass a consumer. Maybe it is about safety and security for the agent, the home and the owner. I am proud of my peers and our commitment to service. The Real Estate sales agents who choose to become REALTORS want to serve at the highest standards. Please honor this commitment to the consumer and think the BEST of us and our simple requests to fill out basic information or meet at a public place. Understand why you need to sign in at Open Houses or show identification. It really could be a matter of life or death.
