Fans, BFDR is an apolitical organization. We exist to rescue dogs and our only goal is to ensure dogs find a home. That said, we also feel an obligation to say something when we see dogs abused or misused. The word is slowly getting out about the dogs of Sochi. If you havent heard, the Russian government has decided to rid their streets of stray dogs by poisoning them. Thousands of dogs have suffered the very worst sort of death in the name of looking good for the world. The utter indifference to the suffering created in the name of looking good to the world at large is nothing short of shocking. I have considered what can be done in protest and I think the reality is not much. Certainly, you can sign one of the many petitions floating around, but petitions are largely symbolic. One approach is to let the International Olympic Committee know what you think of their lack of willingness to confront the Russians over this. The IOC continues to put forth the fiction that all stray dogs are being rounded up by veterinary personnel and taken to shelters and rehomed. Sure they are. In the end, the only thing that will get anyones attention is if the media keeps hammering this, and if the sponsors back out. I personally will be boycotting this Olympics band I suspect others will too. If the numbers are low on viewers, the IOC will feel the heat. I do feel bad for the athletes who worked hard to get where they are, only to be caught in the middle of an outrageous situation.
