Fantastic Wednesdays to everyone. Theres no disputing that technology in todays world has served many wonderful purposes. It is also true that technology has sadly eroded away at the core in which great strength in our families, our friends, and our country was founded. The other night I was watching Dances with Wolves. Simple times for sure, but there was a unity amongst family, community, church, neighbors, and the like. This was a unity built off hard work, a sense of pride, closeness to a higher power, and communication. Communication was not only vital for survival but a source of entertainment and building closeness. Fast forward into today. The following examples are an opinion, not everyones views Im certain. In the early days we used hand gestures and sounds to communicate. As a matter of survival we used to know many people in our communities and blocks by communication. Today we may not know anyone on our blocks because of time constraints and not wishing to bother. Today we have morphed from face to face conversation. To land telephone lines, to email, to texting, to IM and FB. I can remember called my kids, getting voicemail, followed by a two paragraph text reply from them saying they didnt have time to talk. I have been out in group settings with folks I hadnt seen for awhile, and you could have heard a pin drop over the sound of another text message being sent to someone not present. No one was communicating or talking to each other. If we examined how much time in our days we spend on internet, emails, texting, FB ing, IM ing and such, compared that to the amount of live and real conversation weve had, we might be shocked. For those of you who like surveys and studies, a reliable study was done about friending on FB and found that 41% of people accept friend requests from someone they dont know or have any connection with. Whats scary to me is that we know less today about communicating with people and yet we take enormous chances friending cyber people we know nothing about. My hope for all of us today is not to hide from technology but to modify our use of it. No emoticon can replace a live smile, a warm hug, a voice that rings of compassion, and a laugh shared with another human being. I hope that we find a way to getting back to communicating with a sense of feeling and passion. Share your live voice today. Im going Old School so Im rocking to Eric Clapton Mustang Sally.
