Farewell to Toller Cranston It has taken me some time to adjust to the news i received yesterday morning from my agent in San Miguel Mexico that Toller had been found dead by his staff at his home. Having worked with Toller consistently for more than a decade, holding many exhibitions and promotions I had cause to speak with him often and I knew him well. Toller once told me, “anything worth doing, was worth un-doing” and in his passing, that is essentially what has happened. The last art exhibition I held with Toller was in November 2013 at our gallery in Calgary Alberta, when I asked him what we should call the exhibition he thought just a moment and said “A Terrifying Obsession”, we laughed at the reality of the intensity of his life and the constant need for reinvention, the only painting he was interested in was the one that he was doing next. Toller was only ever truly at peace with the world when in his studio and fully engaged in the creation of artworks, with few exceptions, anything that diverted his attention away from his studio was considered an intrusion. The telephone, email, or god forbid, a cell phone were considered enemies to be avoided. Although at times he was very challenging to deal with, Toller was an enormous talent with a magical unique style and for art lovers lucky enough to have collected his artworks, be thankful to have them. I believe that ultimately Toller will not only be remembered as one of the most brilliant and innovative figure skaters in history but also as one of Canada’s greatest artists. Toller approached the creation of artworks with the same tenacity and passion that made him a legend as a figure skater; it was an honor and a privilege to have worked so closely with him and I am deeply saddened at his passing.
