Farmers who planted cover crops between growing seasons saw corn yields in 2012 increase an average of 9.6 percent compared to farmers who did not plant cover crops, according to a recent USDA survey. Soybean yields increase an average of 11.6 percent with the planting of cover crops. In Midwest states that faced severe drought last year, the improvement was even greater: 11 percent increase in yield for corn and more than 14 percent for soybeans.
