Fascinating. I did not know that the NSA is the largest employer of mathematicians. Reading the broad extent of their activities, many make more sense. Suppose, for example, you pick up that a friendly country is on the verge of allowing China to build a drone factory on their soil. You might not be able to do anything to block this directly. But if you can hack the decision makers email and cell phone, you might pick up potentially incriminating information about a lover our an illicit business deal which could then be used to pressure the decision maker to kill the deal with China. Sure this is nasty stuff but its a nasty world out there with many people who are intent on killing us or our friends.
