Fast Lifts and Fast Food changes - some thoughts When people become overwhelmed with movements, we break it down for them - making one small adjustment at a time. Seeking the one single thing that needs to be addressed at the moment that can cause the greatest amount of positive change that the client can see that will encourage them to keep trying once they see results. I feel the same way about nutrition. In the same way that a bodyweight barbell snatch is not likely to happen in a few weeks, a change in lifetime eating habits isnt likely to happen quickly either. Yes, some people are very determined and will do whatever they are told (e.g. you will only eat bugs and nachos 45% of the time on every other thursday for 8 thursdays). But how sustainable is that hardcore instant shift? Just as we are looking for longterm development in technique for movement, shouldnt we be looking for longterm development in eating habits? For example: The first step I take with most people is simply: more water. Because its an addition to the diet (versus taking things away) that has immediate effects. Within 2-3 days we hear, wow, I feel so much better, have more energy and my workouts were better! This easy adjustment gives instant feedback and allows people to feel positive effects as a result of a change in their diet. We can then ride off of that momentum and, with some careful analysis, figure what are some other relatively easy adjustments we can make to build on that progress. As always, this is simply one approach, in the end - its the effects that matter most, not necessarily the method.
