Fasting and Prayer I used to always question the necessity of fasting and prayer. I just didnt understand the need to fast and pray. But as I grow in my spiritual walk with the Lord, I felt a need to explore the reasons for fasting and prayer and here is what I found. I hope this helps you. This is what Jesus had to say about fasting when he was on this earth: Matthew 9:14 - Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not? Matthew 9:15 - And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast You see some people wondered why the disciples of Jesus was not fasting and they questioned him and he said that as long as Jesus was in this world, they need not fast, but the time will come when Jesus will be taken away from them and then they shall fast. Now let us see what happens when we fast. 1. Our prayers are answered. Acts 10:30 Here we read about the gentile Cornelius who was fasting and praying when the angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said that his prayers were answered. We see that that his fasting moved God, and God allowed Peter to preach to him and his household and soon they were born again, received water baptism and then received the Holy Spirit. 2. We can hear the Holy Spirit talk to us (Acts 13:2) We see that while some prophets and teachers fasted together and the Holy Spirit told them to separate out Barnabas and Saul to the ministry. Their fasting led to Saul becoming a minister of the word of God, and as we know he authored so many books in the bible. The Holy Spirit talks to us when we fast and pray. 3. We can cast out demons Mark 9:17-29 explains a rather strange episode that took place. A man came to Jesus and asked him to help his son. He said that he had requested the disciples to cast out the demon in the child, but they could not do so. And so Jesus cast out the demon in that child. The disciples were amazed by it and they questioned Jesus and he said This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting. Fasting gives us the power over the devils. It strengthens our faith. Jesus in Vs 19 says O faithless generation.. Fasting increases our faith in God. God gives us certain revelation when we fast. To Be Continued........
